I have always been passionate about Biotechnology right from my undergraduate, ever since I knew what it entails. Its importance to the society at large most especially, stimulated my interest. While it was silent among my undergraduate course works, I am determined to make it my preferred course if I am opportune for a master’s degree program. To this end, I now chose it for the following Universities; University of Glasgow, University of Aberdeen, or University of Liverpool.
Prior to this time, the relationship between Microbiology; which was my course of study in the University, and Biotechnology had been blur. However, In the historical perspective of biological sciences, Microbiology and Biotechnology are closely related and interlinked. Biotechnology refers to a field that deals with the manipulation of living organisms at the molecular level through recombinant DNA technology also known as Genetic engineering to form useful products for the benefits of mankind. Microbiology on the other hand, is a field of biology that deals with the study of microorganisms in terms of their genomics, proteomics and their applications in food, medical, pharmaceutical and biotech industries. An example of the relationship between them include; The age-old method of fermentation technology in which organisms were used to produce commercially important products. In this scenario, Microbiology covers the natural fermentation of sugar and fruits mashes to alcohol by microorganisms while Biotechnology takes the credit of developing the fermentation technology for mass production and commercialization of alcohol. Thus, acquired knowledge in microbiology has provided me with the basic understanding of molecular biotechnology, genetic engineering, Industrial microbiology, introduction to biochemistry and organic chemistry and statistics all of which evolves around Biotechnology. Hence, I will be able to cope with the challenges of the course with relative ease.
Furthermore, my interest in biotechnology has been underpinned by my long-term career goal, which is to rise through the professional rank to become a researcher in notable public or private organizations. I am aware that such important position will require expert-level knowledge and advanced understanding of Biotechnology. Additionally, with the use of genetic engineering and molecular tools, plants breeding potential are enhanced resulting in increased food supplies in the country. Also, Biotechnology offers greater degree of expertise on biophysical applications and computational biology which will further help me to contribute to various sectors and industries. For instance, as a researcher I would be able to contribute to the medical field, agricultural field, pharmaceutical and industrial field for the production of industrial products such as foods, drinks, drugs, vaccines, hormones etc. Hence, my desire to become an expert in biotechnology.
Evidently, a rigorous course that equips me with the above knowledge and practical skills and more will therefore be critical. From my extensive research, the three Universities I have chosen offer very high quality teaching in Biotechnology and I am confident that any of the three Universities are well equipped to help me advance my knowledge in this field and will also provide me with excellent opportunities for networking and exchanging great ideas.
