In this set of material, the reading passage states that a set of clay jars excavated in a railroad line in Iraq and despite of archaeologists’ suggestion, the writer believes that it is not likely to be an ancient electrical battery. However, the lecturer finds all the idea skeptical and provides some evidence to refute them all.
First of all, the author of the passage claims that no metal wires were located near the vessels which is necessary for electricity conducting. In contrast, the lecturer argues that local people found this archaic jars and they were not trained to collect every part of jars. It is more possible that they threw them away because they felt that it is uninteresting. So, native people could not recognize the importance of metal wires and left them at the original place.
Furthermore, it is mentioned in the reading passage that jars look like copper cylinders which were used for holding scrolls. On the contrary, the lecturer contends that perhaps their original application were holding scrolls but people discovered a new usage for them later and produced electricity. Hence, some different applications are assumed for jars.
Finally, the reading asserts that electricity was not useful for ancient people because they did not have any associated devices. Conversely, the lecturer claims that they could use battery for shocking or tingling to show their magical power. In addition, doctors could use mild electricity for healing such as relieving pain and ache from muscles. In fact, their usage might be limited to simple needs.
