TPO9 - integrated task
Both the article and the lecture discuss the hydrogen-based full-cell engine, the so-called promising alternative source of energy for cars. On one hand, the article argues that this kind of engine has numerous advantage over the conventional internal-combustion engines. On the other hand, the professor opposes by stating that the reading’s author was too optimistic about the new engines’ future.
First and foremost, the reading claims that fuel-cell engines are easily available, contradictory to the fact that internal-combustion engine relies on petroleum, which is a limited source. However, the professor refutes this point by saying that the hydrogen is not usable in the initial water form, but it has to be transformed and stored in a pure liquid state, which is difficult to do. Moreover, he states that we don’t have the technology to do that yet.
In addition, the article posits that hydrogen-based fuel cells will solve the pollution problems in the world. Nonetheless, the professor casts doubt on this point by emphasizing that the process to produce pure hydrogen will, in fact, cause pollution. According to the professor, this process uses burning coal and oil so that the factory in which it occurs will pollute the environment.
Last but not least, the reading’s author indicates that fuel-cell engines will be economically competitive since people will spend less money to operate them. In contrast, the professor rebuts this argument. He argues that those engines include an expensive component: platinum. As a result, it won’t cost the consumers less to operate them. Additionally, other components than platinum have been tried out but none of them turned out to be successful.
