Both author and lecturer offer two opposing views on the accuracy of migration hypothesis, related to the Edmontosaurus to overcome the inhospitable condition in winter. While the reading section lists some reasons to give adherence to this incident, the professor casts doubt on the validity of these reasons and presents some clues to call into the question for the information provided in the reading part.
First of all, the article mentions to the Edmontosaurus's diet, which was a herbivore and the demand for vegetation led to migration. However, the instructor challenges its validity. The professor states that during the summer, in the North Slope, there was plenty of food supply, which caused by the daily 24 hours of direct sunlight. As a result, the myriad source of vegetation died out after each summer and stored for winter usages. In addition, the Edmontosaurus was able to eat the dead plant matter.
Next, meanwhile, the text posits that the Edmontosaurus lives in the herd and the living in a herd is a logic reason for the migration. On the contrast, the lecturer refutes this claim. She asserts that there are the other reasons for living in a herd. For instance, the animal lives in a herd to protect itself from the feasible danger of predators; such as a specific elk which utilizes this method to defense itself. Therefore, the Edmontosaurus could live in a herd for defense itself.
Last, the passage surmises that the dinosaur’s physical ability helped it to move a long distance. On the other hands the professor casts doubt on this issue since solo the adult Edmontosaurus possessed this capability; moreover, the young Edmontosaurus had this problem to keep pace with the adult dinosaurs and they migrated in a speed, which could slow down the whole herd. Besides, the juvenile Edmontosaurus was not able to protect itself lonely. Thus, the adult dinosaurs did not leave them alone. Consequently, they did not migrate.
