The reading passage contends that there are advanced several hypotheses explain why the yellow cedar, a species of tree that is common in northwestern North America, has declined. On the other hand, the lecturer brings about several points that contradict this argument.
First of all, the lecturer questions the hypothesis in the reading passage that insect parasites, specifically the cedar bark beetle is major cause of declining the yellow cedar. This is attributed to the fact that the tree is resistant of attack from the beetle because of their poisonous and powerful chemical. Even the beetles have could eat the wood already damaged or sick, they have difficulty to eat the healthy trees. Thus, the reading passage’s first theory is invalid.
Moreover, the lecturer casts doubt on the hypothesis in the reading passage that the trees have been attributed to brown bears. This is because even the bears are capable to destroy trees by their clawing, they could not cover areas which the yellow cedar trees plant, only specific area the bears live. Consequently, the reading passage’s second theory is contradicted.
Last but not least, the lecturer disagrees with the theory in the reading passage that gradual changes of climate have blamed to the trees’ root systems. It is obvious that the trees where are planted in lower elevation which warmer than in higher elevation are more likely to die. As a result, the reading passage’s last hypothesis is refuted.
