The reading passage explores with the issue of whether storing patients' medical records in electronic databases have more advantages than traditional paper-based record keeping. The professor's lecture deals with the same topic, however, she is uncertain about the benefits of using electronic databases, which contradicts what the reading states, and she uses three specific reasons to support her idea.
First, even though the reading passage suggests that the use of electronic records can reduce budgets, since the cost of storing and transferring of medical records can be saved a lot, the professor argues in the lecture that electronic databases can not saving money on record storage, this is because there are some necessary paper record for emergency back up, which means the cost of paper storage can not be reduced. Obviously, the professor's argument disproves its counterpart.
Moreover, contrary to the statement in the reading that electronic medical records can reduce the probability of medical errors by handing illegible handwriting and other human problems, the professor contends that the using of electronic database can not decrease medical errors, then she supports this point with the fact that doctors need staffs to interpret paper recorded informations to electronic database, so that Illegible handwriting can still be a problem, as a consequence, electronic medical records can not help reducing errors.
Finally, the professor asserts that it is difficult to use medical information for research, whereas the reading claims that medical records can substantially help medical research by gathering large amounts of data from patient records. The professor proves this claim is indefensible by pointing out that there are privacy laws strict the use of medical information of patients, as a consequence, researchers can not get large amount of patient's data records easily, so that electronic records's help of medical research is limited.
