The passage and lecture both discuss three suppositions around population declining of a common tree in northwestern North America, which is dubbed yellow cedar. The reading posits three main hypotheses to illustrate this reduction. In contrast, the professor mentions that the arguments of the passage are not adequate and convincing and demonstrates some counterarguments.
Firstly, the text points that perhaps the insect parasites like cedar bark beetle can be a good justification to depict this population decreasing. The lecturer refutes this and says that healthy cedars are very resistance against insects infestation. They produce poisonous chemical material on their barks and leaves that is harmful for beetle larvae. In fact, this insect likely attack cedar trees which already died. Therefore, they cannot be liable for this lessening.
Secondly, the article claims that possibly brown bears which look for cedars bark's sugar can explain this reducing. However, the speaker indicates that although brown bears have some damages, they cannot cause this overall decreasing. The cedars declining happen on the main lands and islands, but there are no bears on the islands. Thus, declination occurs with and without bears and so they cannot be responsible.
Thirdly, the passage puts out that the climate changing and as a consequence freezing the cedars’ root can be the culprit of this event. The professor denies this and suggests that the passage forget more trees are dying in lower elevations where the weather is warm. If climate drives this decline, there must be more declines in cold weather of the high lands. Even though the climate has some impact on trees' root, it cannot kill them.
