The lecturer raises three arguments to cast doubt on the idea from the reading passage that people nowadays read less literature and thus lowered the level of culture.
To begin with, the professor rules out the claim that no other types of books can provide as much intellectual stimulation as literature do, citing that there are a variety of books like scientific fictions, political comments that are also able to inspire our imagination. A book needn't to be a literature to be great.
Furthermore, the professor argues that although there is a general decreasing trend in the number of books people read, there are many other forms of great culture like music and movies. They are not a lower level of culture, like the reading material suggests. Instead, culture is changing, and music and movies can be even more direct than literature.
Finally, the lecturer disagrees with the suggestion in the passage that readers are responsible for less support and investment provided to literature writers, instead attributes it to the authors themselves, indicating that some authors' work is difficult to read, and even readers from the past would be unwilling to read them.
In conclusion, based on the arguments I mentioned above, reading less literature does not neccessarily means that there is a decline in culture.
