The reading and the lecture are both about the possible reasons for the extinction of Steller's Sea cow. The author of the reading believes that sea cows extincted due to human and environmental behavior. The lecturer casts doubts on the claims made in the reading. He thinks that the extinction of sea cows are unknown and humans and the environment is not the reason for its extinction.
First, the author claims that the sea cows extincted due to over hunting by groups of native Siberian people. He believes that hundreds of years off too much hunting by Siberians caused the decline of sea cows. This point in challenged by the lecturer. He says that Siberian people did not hunt sea cows. Furthermore, he points out that sea cows are massive creatures and weighs about 10 tonnes, so people cannot hunt these animals.
Secondly, the author states that the ecosystem disturbances affect the extinction of sea cows. He argues that the decrease of their main food source, kelp cause the decline of sea cows' population. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer. He suggests that the sea cows did not go extinct because of lack of kelp. He elaborates this point by mentioning that their no report mentioning extinction of other marine animals such as whales.
Finally, the author mentions that sea cows became extinct due to hunting by European fur traders. He is of the point that after the invasion of fur traders there was a rapid decline in sea cows. The lecturer, on the other hand, feels that fur traders are not responsible for the extinction of sea cows. He puts forth the idea that before the invasion of fur traders, the sea cow population has already been declined.
