The reading passage claims that ethanol fuel is not a good alternative for gasoline because of some reasons. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas implausible and presents some evidence to refute them all
First, the reading holds the view that use of ethanol would result in global warming since ethanol releases carbon dioxide just like gasoline. On the contrary, the professor brings up the idea that although burning ethanol releases some degree of carbon dioxide, it does not end to/result in/lead to global warming. The explanation is that ethanol is made of plants such as corn. Since plants naturally absorb carbon dioxide which is in the atmosphere and for producing ethanol more plants are needed to grow, so the growing plants remove the produced carbon dioxide.
Second, the author argues that using ethanol would reduce the amount of plants which are main sources of food of some animals. In contrast, the lecturer dismisses this issue due to the fact that this process is not going to reduce the sources of food for animals. The part of the plants which is used for producing ethanol is a kind of component of plants which is not eatable. Since the parts which are animals' food are not used, the food still would be available.
Finally, the reading passage asserts that the price of ethanol is very high. Conversely, the speaker highlights the fact that although this claim is true and producing ethanol is supported by the government at the moment, it will not be the same in the future. People will buy more ethanol in the future, so producers will produce more ethanol. As a result, the price will go down. With a drop in price, even more ethanol will be available. Moreover, statistics reveal that by three percent rise in production of ethanol, the price will go down by forty percent.
