The following appeared as a part of an advertisement for Adams, who is seeking re-election as governor:
“Re-elect Adams, and you will be voting for proven leadership in improving the state’s economy. Over the past year alone, 70 percent of the state’s workers have had increases in their wages, 5,000 new jobs have been created, and six corporations have located their headquarters here. Most of the respondents in a recent poll said they believed that the economy is likely to continue to improve if Adams is re-elected. Adams’s opponent, Zebulon, would lead our state in the wrong direction, because Zebulon disagrees with many of Adams’s economic policies.”
Discuss how well reasoned … etc.
The argument that re-electing Adams as the state’s governor will be voting for proven leadership and will improve the state’s economy raises some important concerns that must be addressed to substantiate the argument. The statement that follows, gives various facts and figures to show Adam’s achievement and support the claims. Further, the author tries to give an example of a recent poll that would justify Adam’s re-election as the state governor and how his opponent Zebulon’s election would cause turmoil in the state. This does not constitute a logical argument and it certainly does not support or provide proof to the main argument.
Most inadequately, the argument does not address the fact that 70 percent of the state workers have had an increase in their wages within one year. These humongous figures just try to show a politician’s strategy to get re-elected. It can be quite possible that during Adam’s tenure the state workers had to lose jobs and their wages were cut, just before elections did the workers get a wage increase so that they can be pleased to re-elect Adam. Workers form a majority in any urban population, and to win a election one needs to have this majority by his side.
Second, the argument fails to provide proper supporting evidence to link between the 5000 jobs that have been created or the six new corporations that have been established with Adam’s tenure as a governor. It can be quite possible that these six new corporations are a result of hard work done by a previous governor and the credit of which has been taken up by Adam for his election campaign. Similarly, the 5000 new jobs are a result of these six new corporations and in order to fool the general population it has been presented in a separate and pleasant way.
Finally, the argument addresses the results of a poll as a major sign of support for Adam to be re-elected as governor. It can be well assumed that the results of this poll are either modified or the sample space taken for the poll consisted of a majority of Adam’s supporters. Further, the argument most dubiously states that Adam’s opponent Zebulon should not be elected because his policies are different and might lead the state into wrong directions. It is possible that Zebulon is a better leader than Adam and Adam is quite threatened with him because his policies are far superior to that of Adam’s.
In conclusion, the argument leaves out several key issues; it is not sound or persuasive. If it had included the points mentioned above it would have been far more through and convincing.
