The reading and the lecture are both elaborating on whether we should have or should not have “let it burn” policy and explain it with an example of 1988s Yellowstone fire. The author of the article believes that the policy is not good and gives references on damage it caused in the example. The lecturer casts doubt on claims made in article. He advocates that “let it burn” policy is very much required as forest fires is a natural phenomenon and can be means of new natural creations.
First of all, the author claims that Yellowstone fire has caused large scale damage and affected vegetation. He states that fire eat up almost one third of land destroying large and small trees. The lectured disagrees on this point. He thinks fire has brought up new vegetation in the land. He explains that fire cleared the land which in-turn gave opportunity for new smaller plants to grow. It increased the diversity in area with the new species of plants.
Secondly, the author argues that wildfire destructed the habitat of many animals. He says that many small animals got killed in the fire which disturbed the existing food chain. It makes restoration of animals who survived in fire more difficult. This point is challenged by lecturer. He mentions that after fire there is new population growth in small animals. He adds that these small animals now attract predator or large animals and food chain is already restoring in Yellowstone park region.
Finally, the author has the opinion that fire killed the local business. He thinks that the land is devastated after fire which reduces the number of visitors to park. The lecturer, on the other hand, says that wildfires do not occur every year. He explains that the park is restoring its beauty and visitors started visiting this place again.
In conclusion, both writer and lecturer put up their opinion on policy and both are convincing in their arguments.
