The reading and the lecture are about the zebra mussel, which is shellfish native to Eastern Europe. He thinks that this fish will invade the waters in North America and it can not be stopped. He provides three reasons for his belief, however, the lecturer casts doubt on all of them as follows.
First, the reading claims that the zebra mussel controlled any new habitat that it reached. The professor, on the other hand, believes that this was possible only in the past. He added that now we have the necessary knowledge to stop its invading. He suggests that the ships that carry the ballast water empty this water in the ocean before arriving to its destination, which will kill the fish.
Second, the article argues that the zebra fish has no predators in its new habitat which will make it prevalent over the other types of fish. The professor, in contrast, refutes this supposition by stating that it may be true at the beginning of the arrival of the fish to its new habitat. He elaborates this point by saying that after a while of arriving the birds notice this new creature which a good food for them. The birds can eat a huge amount of this fish.
Third, the text contents that the zebra mussel will have a negative impact on the other fish since it feeds on the plankton which is food of other animals as well. That will cause the decrease of the numbers of the other fish. The lecturer rejects this hypothesis by stating that although it is true that the zebra fish will feed on the plankton, but in the same time it produces many nutrition in the sea. This nutrition will gather at the bottom of the water which is considered a good food for the bottom fish.
