“All college and university students would benefit from spending at least one semester studying in a foreign country.”
The speker claims that all college and university students would benifit from spending at least one semester studying in a foreign country but stated in this way the speaker fails to overlook the risks involved in such a transition for one semester alone. The claim says that the students would benifit from spending at least one semester not giving a guarenteed information as to how benificial it would be and fails to provide stats regarding whether the course is already taught in the same country with much greater quality.
However, this statement fails to realize that not all students can afford a study abroad. Many students who would have to work on the other half of the day to support themselves cannot afford such a study plan and it is directly proportional to their work performance and absence at work. The amount of money needed to travel is an added expenditure to the course the student takes studying abroad. Many banks provide loans in such cases wherein a lot of headache is involved and it is not a practical strategy if one chooses to study just one semester abroad.
To illustrate another flaw in the mentioned argument, the speaker fails to provide insights regarding how this is going to benifit a college or university student. Considering the amount of time needed to adapt to the teaching and educational methods, time durations and which part of the day is a course taken, plays a vital role in day to day activities of a student and also already existing students may not be easily made friends with, which again comes in as a cultural shock.
Finally, the author specifies a foreign country without carefully curating the courses wherein a country can be deemed best at. There is no reasonable explaination as to which course is already of much higher quality in the present country. Students residing, working and studing in the present country do have perks which are lost just for a semster and may or may not be regained back.
In order to assess the merits of the given claim, although studying abroad may provide handful of benifits to a student, it is often difficult financially, culturally and timely again leading to the backdrop of this argument.
