The article states that ecocertification of wood products in the USA will not attract companies and consumers attention becuase of three reasons. The professor, on the other hand, disagrees with this claim, believing that ecocertifcation is a novel idea which both the companies and costumers prefer of having products having ecocertification labels.
First of all, it is mentioned in the article that American consumers distrust advertised products, since most of them are low quality. This leads to the fact that people do not care about the certified or uncertified wood products as they do not trust all the products advertised. The professor debunks this claim, saying that American costumers, indeed, rely on the products which are advertised by an independent organisation and because the ecocertification is planned to be issued by an independent international institution, the American costumers are going to trust the label.
Secondly, the author expresses that due to the higher price of ecocertified wood products than unecocertified ones, people are reluctant to buy them. It is true that every one likes to buy cheap products, not only Americans. However, professors mentions that American people tend to buy the cheaper brand if the other one is much more expensieve. This means that when the price difference is only 5 percent, Americans consider other factors rather than the price. They like to preserve and protect their environment and specially their forests, therefore they are going to purchase ecocertified wood as they are environmentally friendly.
Finally, according to the text, the American companies do not proceed the ecocertification as they cannot sell their products abroad. The lecture opposes this point of view, mentioning that the competition between foreign companies is much more important than attracting foreign consumers. If the American companies are not applying for ecocertification, the well-known international compaines will dominate the domestic market. Hence, all Americans will purchase ecocertified wood products from international brands than buying from domestic companies.
