In the lecture, the professor discusses why the three solutions raised in the reading are not plausible for saving the diminishing Torreya population.
To begin with, the reading passage claims that Torreya can be planted in the northern part of Florida, where they have inhabited for thousands of years, thanks to the unique microclimate there. However, the speaker refutes this and argues that the microclimate in north Florida has been dramatically altered as a result of global warming or other effects, so Torreya may no longer adapt to the weather there.
Secondly, the lecturer rules out the possibility of assisted migration, saying that the consequence of doing so is unpredictable. For instance, previously, a kind of endangered tree planted in a new place has become so advantaged that it wiped out other rare species in the area. Hence, it is not advisable to plant Toreyya in further northern locations, as a rebuttal to the second plan in the reading.
Finally, contrary to the assertion in the reading material that moving Toreyya seeds and saplings in research centers could protect the plants, as well as boosting research, the instructor points out that the population would be vulnerable to diseases. The lack of adequately large population and genetic diversity are two prime reasons, the speaker says.
