The bar chart illustrates the variation in the cost of houses in five separated areas in two spans of periods, 1990 – 1995 and 1996 – 2002 compared with the prices of the year 1989.
Overall, over a period of 12 years, the majority of cities witnessed an upward trend in average house prices except Frankfurt.
Looking at the detail, between 190 -1995, in comparison with 1989, the prices of houses in Tokyo and London decreased dramatically by the same percentage which was approximately 7%, whereas New York declined by only 5%. By contrast, the other cities which were Madrid and Frankfurt saw minuscule increase of about 1% and 2% respectively.
The cost of houses in 5 cities has significantly changed in the second period, from 1996 to 2002. The expenditure on houses in London raised considerably by 12% and 19% when compared with 1989 and the period of 1990-1995 properly. New York and Madrid has also the similar trend in average house prices with an increase of 5% and 4% appropriately. The cost of house in Tokyo still reduced by 5% but the decline rate for previous period shrank by 2 percentage points. Frankfurt grew only 1% and this is the only city which underwent a decrease in the prices of houses during a period of 12 years.
