The reading passage and lecture both discuss three assumptions around silver coin history in Maine and Canada. The text provides three supports to indicate that coin is not genuine historical evidence. In contrast the professor states that the justification of reading are not convincing and demonstrates three counterarguments.
Firstly, the reading section posits that the distance between native American site in Maine where the coin first discovered and Norse settlement in Canada is more than thousand kilometers. Consequently, it does not have any connection between them. However, the speaker refutes this and mentions that the distance was a reasonable one and Europian traveled back to Maine at the end of they survey.
Secondly, the article claims that they did not find any other coins at Canadian sites. As a result, Norse did not brig any silver coins with them to North America. On the other hand, lecturer rejects this and claims that Norse went back to Europe and collected costly jewelries and coins. Besides, they pack other valuable things and return to Europe.
Thirdly, the author points out that American did not know the value of silver coins. Therefore, it was useless for them. Conversely, the professor disapproves this point and refutes this. He illustrate that not only unusual things such as jewelries or neckless were useless for them but also they trade with this costly things.
