The authors of the reading passage depreciate the importance of communal online encyclopedia, arguing that they have numerous disadvantages. The lecturer, however, refutes the arguments of the reading passage due to the following reasons.
First, online encyclopedias have less errors inasmuch as they can be corrected by online users. This assertion is apparently in contradiction with the statement of the reading passage that there is more inaccurate information in online encyclopedias.
Second, hackers can not have access to the indisputable and crucial information inasmuch as these parts of articles are not editable_ they are provided only in read-only format. Here comes another disagreement between the reading and the lecture.
Third, the fact that a variety of topics are covered in online encyclopedias is, in fact, a virtue, not a disadvantage. Traditional encyclopedias can not provide their audience with various topics for the have limited space, and hence, they have to exclusively decide which concepts are more essential and neglect the rest of the topics. This contradicts with the reading passage that has considered this fact as a disadvantage.
To sum up, the lecturer believes that, even though neither online nor offline encyclopedias are comprehensive, the online versions are far better than offline ones according to the above reasons.
