fossil market
According to the reading, the commercial market for fossils, particularly of dinosaurs, has negatively affected science and also public interests in fossils; however, the lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the reading. She believes that the advantages of fossil market outweigh its disadvantages.
Firstly, the reading asserts that the private collectors’ access to fossils has restrained the public to view them. The lecturer refutes this argument by explaining that the commercial fossil market offers the opportunity to schools and libraries to purchase unique fossils and then exhibit them for public viewing.
Secondly, the reading states that this would limit the scientists’ access to fossils; as a result, they cannot study the fossils and thereby make scientific discoveries. The lecturer, on the other hand, notes that every fossil has to be identified by a scientist or an expert before entering the fossil market. Therefore, the scientists have the chance to do all the necessary experiments and tests.
Finally, the reading claims that untrained fossil collectors often destroy the valuable evidences in the environment where fossils are discovered. In contrast, the lecturer posits that if it was not for the collectors’ efforts, many fossils would have not even been found in the first place. Taking that into consideration, it is better to have some information about fossils than to have not at all.
