According to the passage, humpack whales may be navigating by the stars and migrate longer distances. But, the lecturer puts doubt on it and thinks this concept of navigating through the stars is unconvincing.
Firstly, the passage claims that the humpack whales are intelligent enough to use stars to navigate by. Also, the brain power of whales' far exceed most of the animals. They can navigate by stars because they are intelligent enough for it. However, the lecturer states that there is no relation between the intelligence and use of stars. He gives example of dogs. They are not as much intelligent as whales but they sometimes navigate by the stars. So the intelligence and use of stars are not likely to be connected.
Secondly, the passage states that humpack whales relay on stars at night to provide them with the external signs by which to maintain direction over longer distances. But, according to the lecturer the animals sense or feel the external objects or forces. According to the experiment, the humpack whale senses the magnatic field. It is able do it because of biomagnatic part in the body.
Finally, the passage states that the function of spy-humping in whales is that they are looking at the stars which provides them information about the directions. They sometimes seems to be floating straight up for minutes at a time. To contradict, the lecturer says that the spy-humping is very rare. Shark often do hunting during the day time without the help of stars.
To conclude, the passage provides various facts and behaviors of humpack whales to prove that they use stars for navigation. But, the lecturer gives counter explanation of it and provides some other facts about humpack whales.
