The reading casts doubts on the creator of the painting - Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White Bonnet - because of multiple reasons - clothing, illumination and joining of wood pieces. However, the lecture claims that by thorough re-examination, the original painting had all the elements, which proved that this painting is indeed the work of Rembrandt.
First of all, the reading claims that clothing the woman in the painting wore is a luxurious one, which is inconsistent to the white linen cap. It states that Rembrandt would give a lot of attention to the subject's clothing. But, the lecture states that by looking carefully through X-rays, the fur coat was not a part of the original painting. Whats more, it was added after 100 years in order to increase the value of the portrait to depict the person as a formal aristocratic lady. Hence, the professor counters the first argument made in the reading - there is inconsistency in clothing.
Besides that, the lecture states that in the original painting, the woman wore a simple, light colored dressing and due to this clothing, the face was illuminated. This could prove that the original painting was showing the realistic features, in accord to what we expect to see in the Rembrandt's paintings. Hence, the statement that the face should appear in shadow, according to the reading, was countered in the lecture.
Finally, on the one hand, the reading posits that there was no other painting by Rembrandt which was glued on multiple pieces of wood and one cannot come to a conclusion that this painting was created by him, but on the other hand, the lecture states that the original painting was enlarged later to enhance the grand look of the painting. Whats more, they found that the original painting was done on a single piece and there was an additional painting - The White Bonnet, Rembrandt's self-port - which was painted on the wood obtained from the same tree as that of Portrait of an Elderly Woman in a White bonnet. This would validate that the painting was in fact done by Rembrandt.
