The author and the lecturer both deal with declining yellow cedar which is a species of tree that is common in northwestern North America. The author of the reading believes that population of yellow cedar has been declined more than a century now. However, finding all the ideas questionable, the lecturer repudiates the claims made in the article and asserts that the hypotheses referred to are not convincing, then presents some evidence to the contrary.
First of all, the author points out that decreasing yellow cedar may result of attacking insect parasites. Cedar bark beetle is one of the particular parasites which kill the tree.it is mentioned that beetles larvae eat wood; thus they lead to killing and declining yellow cedars. Conversely, this point is challenged by the lecturer. He says that cedars are resistant to parasites. In fact, their barks and leaves are powerful. Furthermore, he argues that healthy cedars do not influence by the insects. In other words, yellow cedars which are damaged and sick suffer from parasites insects.
Second, the author contends that bears cause to decrease yellow cedars. The article notes that bears which eat tree barks get their energy from the sugar of trees. If bears overuse sources sugar, yellow cedars become weaken. In contrast, the lecturer disputes this point and clarifies the fact that declining yellow cedars is not related to bears. He elaborates on this by mentioning that population of cedars are scattered in North main and islands and reducing population is seen in both of which although there are no bears in islands.
Finally, the author states that climate changes may cause shorten yellow cedars. The article establishes that the systems’ roots of trees have influenced and the time of growing roots have changed. As a matter of fact, roots start growing in the late winter when the temperature is low, so they destroyed. The lecturer, though, posits that many trees are vulnerable about the significant variation of climate. He puts forth the idea that elevation degrees of high and low temperatures can not lead to diminishing the yellow cedars population because other species have experienced similar conditions nevertheless they have survived.
