To begin with, while the reading points out that the extraordinary intelligence humpback whales possess helps them to use stars as navigating tools, the professor believes that there is no clear connection between intelligence and ability to navigate by stars. For instance, the professor argues that some animals like ducks, with a average cognitive ability, can navigate by stars. Moreover, it is more like an instinct that helps animals to use stars. Thus, the supporting evidence which the passage suggests is not associated with the ability to navigate by stars.
Secondly, the reading passage asserts that whales' straight line migration route could be a strong support to the argument. Nevertheless, the professor presents an alternative explanation to the phenomenon that whales move in straight lines. Hence, the whales could as well use this method to move in straight lines.
Finally, the professor believes that spy-hopping is not convincing evidence supporting the argument of the passage as well. Though it is a rare behavior, it also appears on some other animals such as sharks. However, sharks actually do not migrate; their heads float above the water to find potential preys. What is more, spy-hopping happens in the day for humpback whales, if they do use spy-hopping as a way to look at stars to navigate, it should, however, occur during night. Thus the professor rejects the connection between spy-hopping and navigating by stars.
To sump, the professor clearly identifies the weakness in the reading passage and shows that the argument in the reading that humpback whales navigate by stars is not persuasive enough.
