Although the author suggests three main hypotheses to state the advantages of genetically modified trees that produce more fruits, grow faster and tolerate in harsh condition, the professor in the lecture finds all reasons dubious and brings up three main points to refute them all.

The first reason is that genetically modified trees are more resistant than natural trees in harsh condition. For example, in Hawaii, the pest-resistant papaya trees are more likely to withstand from virus infection. However, the lecturer states that natural trees that are genetically diverse are more resistent in harsh condition. Even if some of their speices cannot survive in that condition, they have some individual trees that can persist in harsh condition. However, due to the unformity of gentics in genetically modified trees they cannot withstand the undesired condition such as climate change and insect invasion.

Secondly, the reading matreial argues that genetically modified trees are financially beneficial since they grow faster with great yeild and more income with less pesticides. In contrast, the professor holds the view that genetically modified trees have some hidden costs. Companies have to spend more money on genetically modified trees since they have to pay farmers. In addition, it is illegall to grow plants without permission and companies have to pay for it.

Finally, the reading passage believes that genetically modified trees causes natural and wild trees, particularly scarce trees, survive from overplant. On the other hand, the speaker gainsays this idea and states that genetically modified trees make the situation that natural trees compete with them for resources such as sun light, soil nutrient and water. Since they are grown amongst natural trees, they may cause outcompete and decline the population of native trees.
