Although the author argues three main facts of the use of carved stone balls, the stones found in Neolithic period in Scotland, the professor finds them dubious and brings three counter claims to refute them all.
Firstly, the author takes the view that these stones were used as weapons for fighting and hunting. Conversely, the professor finds it unconvincing and claims that if they were used as weapons, they sould have had some cracks or flaws on their surfaces or been broken up to some peices. However, they are perfect and free from faults.
Furthermore, the passage holds the view that they were served as a system of standard measurement and exerted in trade since they were not changeable in size. The professor, on the other hand, asserts that their uniform shapes do not mean that they have same masses. While they are comprised by variety type of material including sandstone and cordsite, they have different densities meaning that they have different masses.
Eventually, the reading argues that the stone balls' elaborate design shows some social mark. In contrast, the professor disagrees and believes these stones are not only carved in a simple and intrigue design but also if they fulfilled as social mark, they should be buried by their owners as this was a costume from Neolithic period while no stone was found in neither graves nor temples of these high-level people. Thus, it is not likely to be used as social utilitarian.
