TPO 13- Buying and selling fossils
The author enumerates some disadvantages of selling and buying fossils by private collectors to indicate that numerous people are harmed because of this happening. The lecturer concedes the point mentioned in the reading that this process causes some negative consequences, but she firmly believes that aforementioned reasons are exaggerated to some extent.
First, the author asserts that selling and buying fossils in private brings about a less accessibility for ordinary people since collectors do allow nobody to visit such valuable objects. Nonetheless, the speaker refutes the presented perspectives by considering other aspects of this issue. She argues that this business is beneficial for some organizations and institution which are not highly expanded to buy such fossils, and as a result low-level firms provide public with these relicts. Hence, the claim is not acceptable and does not make sense.
Second, according to passage, the business of fossils may lead to fewer discoveries due to the fact that the rich buyers spend a great deal of money on rare fossils. Therefore, scientists cannot touch these objects, and consequently they miss a lot of possible discoveries. On the contrary, the professor declines the statement, on the grounds that she thinks it is not realistic. In fact, almost all fossils should be examined and tested by scientists and researchers in order to be validated.
Third, based on the author's claim, a large proportion of fossils are destroyed since myriad of collectors are untrained, and they cannot preserve antique and delicate objects. Conversely, the lecturer takes the opposite point of view. She points out the fact that it is worthwhile to find these fossils since they might not be discovered. In other words, it is preferred that these collectors find fossils and help scientists to reach more evidence to the situation that many of them remain undiscovered.
