According to the given set of the reading passage, it is the author's conviction that the zebra mussel, which is a freshwater originated from Eastern Europe, has been dispersed in some parts of the North America and have had significant problems, will never be stopped owing to several highlighted reasons. However, the lecturer cast doubts on this claim and refutes the justification by saying that the human's knowledge was not sufficient in the past in order to control this phenomenon.
First of all, the author holds the view that the ships are responsible for distribution of the zebra mussels by transporting them in their bottoms or in the ballast water. On the contrary, the lecturer finds this reason doubtful by saying that it is true that zebra mussels have gone by these ships, but while refilling the water of ships in the North America, the salty water kill a huge number of zebra mussels and thus these species will not be able to colonize in the region.
Secondly, although, the author posits that the zebra mussels are not encountered to predators and as a result, they will dominant as soon as possible, the professor refutes this point too and says that a kind of birds is the predators of the zebra mussels in the Europe. So these birds will explore them and eventually will find them to feed.
As the last point to emphasize the reading claim, the author asserts that there will be an enormous decline in the number of fishes due to the existence of competition. Yet again, the lecturer states on the opposite side and contradicts that it is obvious that it will have a negative influence on fishes but on the other hand it causes a positive effect on some specific species. Since the zebra mussels will release nutrient in the bottom of the lake, some fishes will forage them and will survive.
