Do you agree or disagree with the statement: Government should use the tax to pay for the free college education?
Some people support the argument that government should use the tax to pay for the free college education. But I disagree with this thinking. Tax should be used on something that benefits most people, rather than few qualified people. So government should not use tax to support free college education.
To begin with, protecting the environment is the highest priority, and we all know it requires a lot of money and effort to resolve environmental-related problems. Fresh air and clean water should come before the free college education. They are the vital elements for humans and all living creatures. There will be no more fresh air if people continue driving the car to go to work. And biodiversity will disappear if humans keep cutting down trees and wipe out animals’ habitats. Besides, people are threatened by global warming. If factors of warming could not be reduced, humans would face an unprecedented crisis. Thus, government should use the tax for essential things instead of the university or college education.
In the second place, government should tackle traffic problems by spending more money on building public transportation and implement a better policy to guarantee a time-saving commute for all citizens. These basic improvements will benefit all residents and our lives definitely change into higher quality. People no need to get stuck in a traffic jam and they save more time to do some entertainment which helps them to keep away the pressure and relax their mind. It doesn’t mean that education is not important, but government should spend money on solving these daily problems.
Lastly, free college education makes higher education not competitive and students won’t value the higher educational resources anymore. Everyone wants to obtain a high-paying job after graduating from the college. However, college diploma is no longer a guarantee of work in today’s world. There will be a high rate of unemployment. No one wants to have a job with less salary. Higher education is not precious anymore that everyone easily reaches it. In addition, university and college education require a lot of resources such as good professors and sophisticated equipment. Students attend the school to gain advanced knowledge by paying high tuition. Students study very hard in order not to waste their money.
To sum up, base on the discussion above, government should use tax for many other improvements before free college education. Keep environment not getting worse and try to make it better. Also, offer solutions for daily problems. Furthermore, free tuition for college is not a good idea for an improvement of a society.
