In the set of the materials, the article states that sea cow become extinct in 1768 and although there aren't clear reason for their extinction, there are some theories about that. However, the professor, in the lecture, explains that no one knows the main reason of sea cows extinction and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading claims that overhunting could be a good reason for sea cows because they considered a good food in a harsh environment where the native Siberian lived. However, the professor argues that this marine mammal was massive creatures and had an enormous body. In addition, he states that the population of native people wasn't so many. Therefore, they didn't to hunt and kill a lot of them.
Second, the reading passage says that due to the ecosystems interruptions, the kelp that considers the main source of food for sea cows might decline significantly. The professor counters this point by stating that if the number of kelp decrease as a result of changing in ecosystems, it must have some effect on other mammals like whales. Furthermore, the professor mentions that there didn't have any report on whale decline on that period of time. Hence, ecosystems disturbances couldn't be the reason for extinction.
Third, the reading makes the argumentation that the European fur traders were the main cause of extinction of sea cows. The professor refutes this claim by pointing out that the population of these marine animals had declined before the arrival of European fur trader to that island. Thus, these people couldn't consider the main reason of sea cows.
