The Chevalier
The reading and the lecture are both about the memoir written by the Chevalier about adventure about his lives. The author of the reading believes that the memoir is not as accurate as it seems. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She thinks that the claims made are true and explains the same by giving examples.
First of all, the author points that in the memoir it’s described that he was wealthy while he was living in the Switzerland. It is mentioned that he borrowed money from Swiss merchants. This point is challenged by the lecturer. She says He was wealthy, but till he converted all his assets to actual money, he borrowed money from some Swiss merchants there. Furthermore, she argues that it does not mean that he was poor.
Secondly, the author contends that accuracy of conversations with writer Voltaire. The article notes that it might not be accurate enough as the memoir was written after many years passed by having conversations. The lecturer rebuts this argument. She suggests the Chevalier had actually taken notes daily night after his conversations with Voltaire. And he consulted those notes while writing his memoir.
Finally the author states that escape of chevalier from prison, by make way in ceiling. The articles establishes that this might not be case, his friends might have offer bribe to jailer to free chevalier. The lecturer, on the other hand , posits that The other prisoners has more powerful friends, so bribery was not likely in his case. Moreover, she puts forth the fact the government has to repair the ceiling of prison room, which proves that chevalier escapes from the roof by making hole in it.
