Corporations should look to the city of Helios when seeking new business opportunities or a new location. Even in
the recent recession, Helios’s unemployment rate was lower than the regional average. It is the industrial center of
the region, and historically it has provided more than its share of the region’s manufacturing jobs. In addition, Helios
is attempting to expand its economic base by attracting companies that focus on research and development of
innovative technologies.
Author presents the city of Helios as new location for companies. Argument states that Helios is the center of the industrial reason. Another claim author makes that there was no effect of recession on employment in Helios; unemployment rate was lowest. Moreover, Helios’s city administration is attempting to attract more research and development companies. There will be favorable regulations for such companies who are focusing on innovative technologies.
There are few flaws with the reasoning given for presenting the city of Helios as the destination for new business opportunities or for a new location to the exiting business establishments. First flaw is that argument is claiming that there was lowest unemployment rate during recession, indirectly means that trained manpower is not unemployed; In such scenarios, it will be either difficult to find the trained manpower for new business opportunities or will require to pay higher salaries due to shortage of manpower. New business requires initially low-cost manpower in order to stabilize, it is not possible where there are already so many job opportunities. This is not a favorable condition for any new business entity in contrast to the claims made by author.
Second flaw with the author’s reasoning behind offering city of Helios as the sought-out destination for new location or new business, is the claim made about the city that it has historically provided more than its share of region’s manufacturing jobs. This reason has no rationale to establish that city would be best suited for new manufacturing business entities. There are other important factors required for new manufacturing company or new location such as favorable labor, favorable tax regimes, government regulations, availability of raw material, proximity to market. None of such factors has been discussed in the claims made in the argument.
Third flaw with argument is that author makes claims and provides evidence about manufacturing jobs but city of Helios is only interested in research and development companies who are working on innovative technologies. So, this reasoning is inconsistent with the city’s requirement. Moreover, author makes claim that city has provided more than its share of manufacturing jobs; this suggests that locations is best suited for manufacturing companies not for research and development companies. This is contrary statement.
Based on above mentioned reasoning and considerations, argument has many flaws which are inconsistent with the reasoning given or with the city’s requirement. City of Helios seeks for R&D companies working on innovative technologies while argument talks about manufacturing sector. It would have been wise to analyze the factors favorable for R&D companies and to suggest a location accordingly.
