The following appeared as part of an article in the book section of a newspaper Currently more and more books are becoming available in electronic form either free of charge on the Internet or for a very low price per book on compact disc Thus literary cl

In this article, the author concludes that more people will read literary books than ever before. The author’s line of reasoning is that the internet and other electronic forms of books available through compact discs have eliminated two major impediments which are accessibility and affordability of these books. More specifically, he also mentions that as more people adopt reading literary books will create a more sophisticated and learned reading audience. Despite the convincing arguments, I am unconvinced for several reasons.

The first dubious assumption is that people are not able to read more literary books previously merely because of the accessibility and affordability. This assumption is unwarranted. For example, there could be very few people in general who are interested to read literary books than what the author thinks so. Consequently, it may turn out that, contrary to the author’s expectations, the number of people reading literary books can remain unaffected.

Secondly, the accessibility of affordable literary books has increased. On the face of it, this may seem innocuous; however, there could be several reasons for not having enough accessibility. For example, the publishers might not have got permission from the authors to digitally transform the books or enough marketing might not have happened because the marketers might have felt that the audience segment for these books be small and therefore have not made them available with enough volumes.

Moreover, in today’s world, people are more likely to choose the fastest way of content consumption, and with recent new forms of content consumption like podcasts, audiobooks, etc. With big corporate giants like Amazon, Spotify, etc promoting more adoption of audiobooks, I see the percentage of people actually reading on their own is bound to decrease.

In conclusion, this argument is not convincing. To strengthen his argument the author should have provided more evidence that accessibility and affordability are the only reasons for the low adoption of reading literary books. Additionally, he should have shown the evidence that there is an actual increase in accessibility of affordable literary books.
