"In any group effort universal consensus is preferable to majority rule"
Working in groups is inevitable in today's work. With the increase in scope of knowledge, it is necessary to have an interaction of people from different fields so as to make a piece of work successful. Although, working in team has its advantages but sometimes it is difficult to reach consensus in group. So, I concur to statement upto some extent.
Since group is almagamation of people from different backgrounds, each of them may have different opinions. It is hard to get a universal agreement even after a detailed discussion. Taking a example of democracy. It is one of the best example that majority rule is peferable. People have to collaborately elect the person to run their state. It is hard to get consensus on whom to be selected and thus, the majority rule is implemented. If it were not for majority rule, there would be a chaos to reach the universal consensus.
Secondly, in today's fast paced busisness, projects are delivered by team efforts. Since the deadlines are mostly stiff, nobody wants to loose time. As in a group, there might be dissonance among the group members on how to provide the solution and deliver the required. Even after all the brainstorming, its hard to reach the universal consensus and it might take a long time to persuade all people towards a common solution because of which deadline could be missed and could have an adverse effect on the business. Hence the majority rule is prefered in businesses too.
Some might contend that the group will not fuction to its maximum if there is no universal consensus. They are probably right but it is where the role of group leader comes to play. Intially, everybody should get a chance to put their point of view and then there should be a round of voting to reach the solution. It is his paramount duty to motivate the people who donot conform to the selected solution , so that they could deliver upto to their fullest potential towards the goal and the quality of solution is not hampered.
To conclude, I would say that majority is preferred over the universal consensus. Due to the difference in opinion of the each and every individual; reaching conformity between is a time consuming affair and may lead to tension. Although before reaching the majority or voting, everybody should get the opportunity to put their point of view in front of everyone.
