Educational institutions should actively encourage their students to choose fields of study that will prepare them for lucrative careers.
In the world of today, most of the major universities offer courses on various subjects. Every university has degree programs which cover a wide spectrum of topics from arts, sciences, medicine, engineering, law, sports and many others. At any given point of time, careers in some of these fields are bound to be more lucrative than careers in some others. However,it is the job of the university to provide quality education in any subject which it is offering without being influenced by the presence of career paths in that field. So,the educational institutions should treat all thier courses equally and should actively encourage their students to choose fields of study that will prepare them for lucrative careers.
A student joining an educational institution, generally has a good idea about the field,he or she is going to pursue. However, due to inexperience the student may require advice regarding the benfits and pitfalls of choosing a course. For such advice, the educational institutions genrally provide counselling services. But such services should essentially deal in facts, putting the pros and cons of a particular field in front of an aspiring student in black and white. They should indulge in encouraging or discouraging a student towards a partiular course selection.
If educational institutions start actively encouraging their students to choose fields of study that will prepare them for lucrative careers, they will essentially discourage the students to pursue other fields which do not offer lucrative careers at that given time. For example,a student of engineering or medicine might earn more on graduation than a student of literature at present, but that doesn't mean that students should not take up the field of literature or there is no requirement for literature graduates in the world.Such a move on the part of the educational institutions will make the students choose subjects depending upon future careers rather than thier passion, thereby effectively turning an educational institution into a vocational training centre. This is against the very basic ethic of educational institutions which ideally should be the places where the students are provided the necessary support and conditions to pursue their field of choice.
Another drawback of the educational institutions' encoraging the fields with lucrative careers is - there is the danger of these fields getting saturated while the other fields with carrers not as lucrative remaining underdeveloped.Such a move on the part of educational institutions will contribute towards a higher influx of students in some fields offering lucrative careers. As a result, such fields will become fast saturated and there may be a deficit of career options in such fields after some time.On the other hand, the rate of development lesser rewarding fields will come down drastically due to lack of personnel.
Summing up,it the job of educational institutions to provide quality education in all the subjects they support. They should offer impartial advice to aspirinf students regarding course selection but should not actively encourage their students to choose fields of study that will prepare them for lucrative careers.
