The following is taken from a memo from the advertising director of the Super Screen Movie Production Company.
"According to a recent report from our marketing department, during the past year, fewer people attended Super Screen-produced movies than in any other year. And yet the percentage of positive reviews by movie reviewers about specific Super Screen movies actually increased during the past year. Clearly, the contents of these reviews are not reaching enough of our prospective viewers. Thus, the problem lies not with the quality of our movies but with the public's lack of awareness that movies of good quality are available. Super Screen should therefore allocate a greater share of its budget next year to reaching the public through advertising."
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.
First of all, the author mentions the increase of percentage of positive reviews concerned with Super Screen movies and implies that Super Screen movies receive more positive reviews than before. While it is possible that a increase of percentage of positive reviews means a increase of number of positive reviews, the author never answer the question how the exact number of positive reviews changed, which leave his argument vulnerable. One may argues that the number of positive reviews could have remained constant during the past year, but the number of reviews could have decreased because more movie reviewers lose interest in Super Screen movies. In such case, the author's implication become invalid and undermine the validity of his argument.
Builid on that implication, the author connect implicitly the optimism in reviews and the quality of movie and argues the quality of Super Screen moviews has no problem. Maybe reviews from movie viewers could partly stand for the qualify of movies, but the author fails to make this connection concrete. If these positive reviews were from some reviewers who always give positive reviews, the quality of moviews could hardly be represented by these reviews. Perhaps Super Screen movies were praised by movie reviewers for its profundity, but people could hardly understand this profundity and think these movies of low quality. Since the author's argument could not eliminate these possibilities, his argument might be untenable.
Based on the good quality of movies and the reduction of viewers, the author concludes that people are unaware of Super Screen movies and then suggests Super Screen should devote more to advertising. If the public lacks of awareness of Super Screen movies, it is quite sure that there are fewer viewers. But we must ask how much Super Screen has already devoted to advertising. Since the author never presents evidence about that, it is probable Super Screen could have advertise enought for its movies but people don't want to view them because of other reasons. If that is the matter, it undermine the soundness of the argument harshly.
