Governments should place few if any restrictions on scientific research and development

Scientific development has contributed immensely to the development of individuals and the society at large. Science is all around us, from transportation to healthcare, indeed we live in a world of science. While some people might argue that restrictions should be placed on scientific research and development because of the believe that science creates as much problem as it solves, others would state that restrictions is only going to limit our growth as a society, and scientific research only exists to solve the existing problems in our societies. After weighing the evidence, it is certain that restrictions placed on scientific research will do more harm than good to our societies.
Those who would argue for restriction on development might point out to the issue of ozone layer depletion which is a global concern. The ozone layer is very important as it prevents solar radiations from reaching the earth. This depletion is caused by the release of chlorofluorocarbons (CFSs) into the atmosphere through common sources such as refrigerators and air conditioners. With all this evidence, it is easy to believe that certain restrictions on scientific development are necessary. However, I argue that this is not the case as these same scientists are working around the clock to solve the problem of ozone depletion by replacing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) with hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs).
Now consider the healthcare sector, with unrestricted scientific research and development, scientists have found cures to several diseases that were formerly thought to be incurable. For instance, a lot of people have died from HIV/AIDS in the past, however, with continuous research and development, people are now able to live healthier and longer with this disease. Also, consider the case of corona virus disease that plagued the world in 2019, thanks to the quick and prompt intervention of science, millions of lives were saved and the world was able to avoid a major disaster.
Likewise, the internet is a product of science and technology. The several benefits that come with the use of internet cannot be overemphasized – it is a world on its own. The internet has helped solve numerous problems and provided lots of opportunities in our society. In the world of today, unemployment has been greatly reduced due to the help of technology. People no longer need the government to create jobs or depend solely on white collar jobs anymore. Apart from job creations, people can also market their goods and services on several social media platforms. Indeed, the internet is a very big gift from science to the world and I don’t think we can fully harness its opportunities.
In conclusion, it is clear that restrictions on scientific research and development will do more harm than good for our societies and this is evident from myriad of opportunities the internet has to offer, and the safer world we get to enjoy from improved health care sector
