To become a part of or able to live in a new society such as going to new country for study or work, one needs to understand not necessary every but the most important characteristics which form the norm of this society. The above statement bridge the understanding of a society to the need of studying major cities of such society. The assumption behind this statements is that most important characteristics of a society is represented and maintained in major cities, which are usually either the economically developed metros or federal states accompanying with either high-state economy, bustle and animation or the political importance. This statement may be true or false, depending on which societies you are looking at and from which aspects. First and foremost, every society is shaped by multiple factors belonging to so much aspects with unequal importance - economy and democracy usually play essential role in European countries while long-standing traditions and religions are usually key aspects for forming the norms of most Asian countries.

If one would like to study about the economic, political aspects of a society or the societies which the economical factors and/or political issues contribute most to their development, surely he or she must study about its major cites - the above statement is now true. Studying about the major cities, knowing which is the economical history, which advantages and disadvantages that the geographic features of these city ascribed to the formation of the key economies, how different peoples in these cities have come up from the first place and how they interact with each others, etc. will help one infer to most important characteristics of this society. For example to understand about French culture, you must have to study about Paris. But if what you are keened in is people in a society or societies that fame for their traditions, it is not sufficient to study only its major cities but only rural regions because major cities is only one of two faces of this society. Sometimes, it may be a waste of time to study the major cities. For example, it would be too superficial understand of Spain unless you come to the countryside and listen to its famous folk songs. If you only study about Ha Noi or Ho Chi Minh cities, two major cities of Viet Nam, you can not fully comprehend how Vietnamese people behave in certain ways because it is not the economy but the long-term war history and stigma together with traditions that is the matter for this society; and the major cities is where these tradition is rarely seen and maintained.

In conclusion, it is depend on the societies and which aspects you are interested so that you need to study different things and it have no absolute answers about how to understand the most important characteristics of a society.
