Which one of the reason is most important in helping students to study in colleges and universities?
—Having access to the university tutors who can provide individual instruction for the students who have difficulties in study
—Having the help and encouragement from the family and friends
—Having excellent teachers in high school who can help students before the university
Before freshemen step into the campus of a university, there might be a provision in their mind, an imagination of what the university should be like derived from the indirect information sources such as newspapers, televisions and their high school teachers. However, the picture they depict usually fails to match the reality in university. In this scenario, the most effective help they urgently need is the direct guidance from university tutors.
First and foremost, university tutors are better than family, friends and high school teachers in that they themselves are more familiar with the environment of university. Or rather, the tutors have a whole picture of what problems the freshmen can confront and how they should react under such circumstances. For example, if a freshman has difficulty in understanding the lectures, the tutors can offer timely and effective help. But the encouragement from family and friends may only serve to intensify the pressure from lectures. Likewise, the suggestions before college by high school teachers could also be misleading because the structure of college lectures and methods used to address problems are totally differently form that of high school.
Secondly, the university tutors can provide a occasion where the freshmen could learn how to communicate with new people. This will help the freshmen adapt to their college life quickly. Take the social activity as an example, some freshmen might be reluctant to talk to others for reasons such as shyness, fear or lack of topics. And students might tend to isolate themselves especially they don't want others to know their weakness in study. But the tutors could offer such an opportunity that freshmen can freely express their confusion, mistakes and expectations without the pressure of being mocked.
Last but not the least, freshmen can meet more friends at the tutors'. Currently, students have little chance of meeting and talking to strangers. On one hand, the Internet deprives such occasion, because we rely on online social network to maintain relationships addictively and intensively. On the other hand, there is limited location in the campus to meet someone that share hobbies except for the classroom and gym. And the attending the tutors' will provide students with an comfortable place to talk and share than classroom or gym. Therefore, freshmen can use this chance to acquaint more friends, especially those who share similar experience.
To sum up, I contend that university tutors are more important than family, friends and high school teachers in helping students to study. Not only because the university tutors are more professional, but also because attending the tutors' provides more chance to get accustomed to the new environment.
