International entertainers, including sports personalities, often get paid millions of dollars in one year.
In your view, with widespread pverty in the world, are these huge earnings justified?
International superstars including Hollywood actors, singers and sports people are often recipient of exorbitant Salaries while some individuals around the world live below subsistence level. Though this situation can be partly justified on economic grounds, I believe this is mainly the sad embodiment of widespread inequality and unfairness.
On one hand, singers such as Celine Dion possess a unique voice which cannot be replicated by others despite hours of tedious practice. Thus, their exclusive talent should be recognised through lucrative contracts and deals.
Moreover, personal sacrifice is paramount to reach the top of one’s field. As such, sportspeople such as Roger Federer undergo rigorous training and stringent diet. They also experienced a different childhood from an average person, having been trained in their respective specialisation from a young age and having attended special schools to hone their skills. Therefore, they deserve a huge pay check for their pain, effort and courage.
However, it is well-recognised that singing bands such as the Spice Girls are often the fruit of clever marketing campaigns and collaborations among producers, fashion designers and other individuals highly involved in the entertainment industry. Others are able to pave their way to fame since their parents or other relatives already have a foot in the industry. A good example is Dani Minogue, the younger sister of Kylie Minogue. Hence, it may seem that being at the right place at the right time and having the right connections are the main ingredients for stardom. In a way, poor people in developing countries, who are often unnoticed, stand little chance of breaking the vicious cycle of poverty despite toiling as hard as Roger Federer to make a living.
To conclude, the skyrocketing earnings of some international entertainers usually hold little ground given the circumstances which enable these people to achieve them. Nonetheless, we should recognise and reward true talent whenever and wherever they occur.
