Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children). To what extend do you agree or disagree ?
Nowadays, many schools have extracurricular activities for students. Some people support that unpaid community service should be a compulsory subject; others argue that it should not. Personally, I strongly agree to first opinion. Nevertheless, to support my position, both sides of this issue will be discussed.
In the aspects of benefits, volunteer community service, such as constructing facilities in rural area or reading for blinds, to name only two, can teach how to apply theory with real problem in students’ society. Children will have a great chance to develop and practice both inside and outside lesson skills. Besides, helping mind of students will be raised naturally. As a result, when they grow up they will be a quality citizen of the country. Therefore, volunteer service should be a required course.
Turning to consider about drawbacks, if students spend a lot of time to attend service activities, they will not concentrated in their studying duties, especially for those who cannot manage their time. Moreover, students who want to be a educational genius will not have enough time to read textbooks. So, uncharged service should be only elective course.
Having compared the advantages and disadvantages, I admit that there are some concerned problems if charity service is required subject. But, I also support that volunteer service in community should be a compulsory education, because the benefits, especially obtaining outside knowledge, are more significant than the drawbacks. To reduce negative effects, I suggest that teachers should advice their students to balance between study and activity times.
