Studying the English language in an English-speaking country is the best but not the only way to learn language.
Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
A surging proportion of individuals are keen to learn English in the hope that it will open doors to international career, travel and other opportunities. Indeed, the language of Shakespeare is the most widely used medium of communication during global events such as the Olympics, diplomatic and political meetings as well as international trade. While it is commonly accepted that living in an English-speaking country spurs the learning process of English, the latter can, nevertheless, be mastered through other methods.
On one hand, by living in England, America or similar English-speaking nations, a person is exposed to English on a daily basis. Hence, this raises the chance that he will pick up the local accent instead of a non-English accent if he hires an English teacher brought up in the same country as him. Moreover, as opportunities to speak English abound, there is a lesser need to hire an expensive teacher. In turn, the individual saves on his expenses.
However, other ways to study English exist. Watching Hollywood movie productions and buying popular English music albums are among the cheapest options. Well-off parents can, furthermore, afford to enrol their offspring in private schools whereby the medium of instruction is English.
In addition, while toddlers face little difficulty in adopting a second language, adults and teenagers often struggle to do so. As such, in moving to an English-speaking country, they may, at first, complain that locals speak too fast or use local expressions whose meaning they are unable to grasp. Failing to mingle with the locals and preferring to remain within the safety of their own community only make matters worse since the new migrants receive minimum exposure to English. Coupled with these language barriers, the high use of texting language by youngsters and social media renders it fairly difficult for new-comers to distinguish between formal and informal English. As a result, by migrating to an English-speaking country, people may not necessarily improve their fluency in English.
To conclude, the method of learning appears to bear greater importance in mastering English as compared to the location where it is being learned. Hence, it is incumbent on the student to seek his preferred approach to learning a new language.
