The bar graph illustrates the proportion of city and provincial homes with internet access in a European state from 2008 to 2013.
In general, the number of families that had access to internet services gradually increased over the given period of time. This observation is true in both groups, however, a large disparity exists between them in terms of percentages as more families living in the urban and suburban areas had access to the internet than their provincial counterparts. This big difference is more obvious in the first four years, but seems to lessen near the end of the given time period.
From 2008 to 2011, there has been a rapid growth of internet availability in the urban areas compared to a sluggish rate seen in the rural areas. In 2008, 15% of city households had internet services and within three years, it had rapidly risen to 50%. In contrast, only 3% of provincial homes had internet access in 2008 and at the end of 2011, it had only gone up only 15%. This created a 35% difference between the city and rural groups, the largest observed within the study period.
However, there has been a reversal of events in the last 2 years of the given period. The number of homes getting internet services began to slow down in the urban areas while it began to surge in the provincial areas. From 2012 to 2013, internet accessibility slowly rose from 52% to 55% in metropolitan areas, while in the countryside, it abruptly increased from 25% to 35% within the same time period. This momentum of the latter group had diminished the margin between the two groups to 20%.
In summary, from 2008 to 2013, urban households had more access to internet services than provincial household. However, the latter group had begun to catch up in the last few years closing the gap between them.
