Given is the line graph which illustrates the proportion of population aged 65 years and over in three nations: USA, Sweden and Japan from 1940 to 2040.
Overall, the early population trend in the US is similar to the trend in Sweden, whereas the early population trend in Japan is different. In three countries, the estimations of older citizens expect to increase significantly.
The first thing to mention is that both Sweden and the US have fairly identical population trends. From 1940 to 1960, the elderly population rates in both countries were lower than 10 percent, after that the figures rose to approximately 15 percent in 1980. In 1990 and in 2010, the elderly population numbers in Sweden went up to 15% and 20%, respectively, whereas the US elderly population was still under 15%. However, during 2030 to 2040, it is also projected that the older population in both nations will increase gradually together and the US figure will reach to 23% in 2040, while the Sweden figure will rise to 25%.
On the other hand, in Japan, the demographic of aging population is different as its started at 5% and and its dropped to under 5% until 2010. After that, the figure will rise dramatically to 10% in 2030 and increase rapidly to 28% at the end of this period.
