The bar chart below shows the percentage of people living alone in 5 different age groups in the USA between 1890 and 2000.
The bar chart compares the proportion of solo dwellers belonging to five different age groups in the USA from 1850 to 2000.
Overall, people aged 55 to 64 living alone recorded the highest percentage over the period. The proportion of people in all five age blankets who were single increased gradually.
In 1850, about 3% of people in the oldest group were solo citizens, compared to approximately 2.5% of people in 37-46 and 47-54 groups respectively. In that year, no data were recorded for the two other younger groups.
From that time onwards, a single life became more popular among 55-to 64-year-olds, with their figure rising dramatically to a peak of around 17%. Climbing marginally in the first century, the proportion of 47-to 54-year-olds rocketed from under 4% to about 13% in the later half of the 20th century, compared with a slower rise of 4% in the figure for 37-46 group in the same period. The remaining figures showed less significant increases, reaching 8% and nearly 5% of people aged 27 to 36 and 17 to 26 in the year 2000.
