The chart compares the proportion of citizens living alone in 5 age groups from 17 to 64 years old in America during a 150 – year period since 1850.
Overall, the figure for people living alone increased gradually through the period surveyed in all categories and that for people aged 55 – 64 was generally the highest. Units are measured in percentages.
In 1850, figures of three age groups were given. Only around 2% of people aged 37 – 46 and those aged 47 - 54 lived alone, approximately 1% lower compared to those the 55 – 64-year-olds. During the next 50 years, in 1900, the proportion of citizens living alone from 27 – 36 years old contributed just above 2%, while that in 37 – 46 age group remained unchanged. There was a slight increase of approximately 1% and 2% in 47 – 54 and 55 – 64 categories respectively.
A new pattern, people aged 17 – 26, emerged in 1950, with the percentage of those living alone in all ages went up sharply. However, 2000 saw a significant increase in the proportion of citizens living alone. The percentage of the 37 – 46-year-olds living alone was followed by the 27 – 36-year-olds, stood at 7% and 8%, respectively, ahead of the 17 – 26 age group with just 5%. The figure for 47 – 54 years old group was almost 4 times higher than that in 1950, at 13%; whereas that for the 55 – 64-year-olds nearly doubled to reach the high peak at 17%.
