A bar chart shows the changes in the total population of England and Wales from 1700 to 2000 and changes in birth and death rates
The given column graphs illustrate the changes and differences in the number of total citizens, fertility rate and death rate of England and Wales, over a 300-year period between 1700 and 2000. Overall, what stands out from the graph is that although there were downward trends in the birth rate and death rate, the total population increased considerably over the period.
In particular, when it comes to population growth, the figure started at 5 million people in the beginning of the period before rising sharply to double number in population size in 1800. At this point, the year 1900 witnessed a significant growth by 20 million in the population. Afterwards, there was a substantial increase to 50 million people in the number of citizens, which accounted for the highest number and was ten-fold higher than that in population size in 1700.
Meanwhile, the rate of birth per 1000 people was constantly higher than that of death. As can be seen, the birth rate stood at 30 in 1700, compared to 20 for death rate. After that, the graph experienced a dramatic rise of 20 for fertility and death rates in 1800, which occupied the highest rates. Then, in terms of birth rate, the figure was 28 in 1900 and levelled off at this rate in the following 100 years, in comparison with 25,19 respectively for the mortality rate.
