The column graph illustrates the proportion of car ownership in a European country over a 30-year period from 1971 to 2001. Overall, it is obvious that while the percentage of households with 1 car and more than 2 cars experienced moderate rises, the no-car users had been declining over the given period.
In detail, the proportion of homes with no car stood at just under 50% in 1971, before falling steadily by almost 5% during each decade, and ultimately reaching its lowest point of 30% by 2001. In contrast, a single car owners witnessed an initial growth by 10% from 35% in 1971 to 45% in 1981, after which there had been a slight decrease to 40% by 1991. However; during the last decade, the figure surged to roughly a half (50%) in the end, approximately 20% higher than no car households.
Likewise, although the ratio of more than 2 cars was the lowest in 1971 (nearly 25%), the trend grew by 5 % until 1981, and there was a marginal fall by 5% between 1981 and 1991. Afterwards, it had also reached its peak; of 40% by the year 2001, outstripping the share of no-car owners.
