Below is a chart showing how many hours per week an average person spent on various kinds of media, including watching television, surfing on the Internet, listening to the radio and reading printed material. The years covered are from 1990 to 2005.
The number of average hours spending on different kinds of media per individual per week is described for four types of media: television, Internet, radio and printed material. The information provided is for the year 1990 to 2005.
As can be seen from the graph that two categories of media ended up having a lower average in 2005, while two others ended up with higher ones. In 1990, the average person spent around 25 hours watching television until 1996. A few years later, the hour of television gradually decreased until 1998, then dropped dramatically by 2005. The number of hours spent on printed material was at 7 hours in 1990, and although it fluctuated many times, it then decreased to 2.5 hours per week by 2005. Radio, on the other hand, started at just 4 hours per week and remained stable until 2003, then the number slowly increased to just under 5 hours. The data on the hours spent on the Internet showing a different trend. From the very first start to appear in 1993, the hours spent on this type of media steadily went up from 0 hours to 2 hours per week and consistently went up until 2001. From 2001 to 2005, it can be seen a tremendous trend in the time people spent on suffering the Internet, the average climbed up to 14 hours in 2005.
In conclusion, while printed material and radio do not change that much over the time period, it seems that the substantial rise of the Internet has a great effect on the average number of hours that an individual spends on television.
