The line graph below illustrates the percentage of people in various nations those who were 65 years old and older from 1940 and gives prediction till 2040.
In overall, it is clear that the proportion in the USA and Sweden increases from 1940 to 2040, whenever sometimes also experienced a slight downward trend. Whereas, in Japan, it started decreasing from 1940 to1980 before a sharp rise in the number of elderly people by the year 2040.
Initially, in 1940, there were a higher percentage of older people living in the USA than Sweden, 9% and 7% respectively. In USA, there were a growing number of elderly people from 1940 to 1980 and decreased slightly by 2020. However, it is an expectancy that this figure will eventually rise until 2040. In the meantime, a similar pattern is also observed for the result in Sweden, the amount of aged population increased from 1940 to 2040, with two gradual fall about 2% from 1980 to 1990 and from 2015 to 2025.
Over the same period, the old people rate of Japan was the lowest among these three countries with only 5% in 1940. Then, there were a slow decline until around 1990 before rising steadily the same figure as in 1940. Nonetheless, it is forecasted to extremely rise more than double to 25% after 2020. In 1940, that will place Japan in the highest position of percentage of elders.
